Simorgh Shocks Defending Champs in Nawroz Final

23 Mar, 2015

In the final match of the Roshan Afghanistan Premiere League's (RAPL) Nawroz Tournament, Simorgh Alborz defeated Shaheen Asmayee 4-3 in a penalty shootout.
To the surprise of the football world, Simorgh Alborz was the aggressor in this one, constantly attacking Shaheen and forcing them into a defensive strategy for much of the match.
The defending RAPL champions formulated a few solid attacks early on, but could not convert any of them into goals. "We had our chances in the first half but failed to score. You have to covert opportunities against a good team like Simorgh otherwise you lose," said Shaheen Asmayee's Zainuddin Sharifi.
The AFF Stadium in Jalalabad Nangarhar was full of fans, who were cheering for their respective team all game long. This was the first time The Roahan Afghan Premier League had hosted a tournament in the east of Afghanistan. The head of Afghan Football Federation, Nangarhar Shahid Ullah acknowledged, "We are all grateful for having the Nawroz Cup in Jalalabad. We can't wait until next year to do it again."
Although his team lost, Shaheen Asmayee's goalkeeper Hameed Yusufzai was awarded the Most Valuable Player award.
Simorgh Alborz's Farhad Sowgand, with two goals over the course of the tournament, received the Golden Boot award for the Tournament.
